Summary
Health Communication Science Lead / Social Scientist, MITRE

As a Health Communications Lead at the MITRE corporation, I enjoy designing evidence-based communications strategy for U.S. government sponsors. As a non-profit organization, MITRE operates Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDC’s) in the public trust. At MITRE, I work to ensure that our internal (CDC programs) and external (public health partners) communication efforts optimize stakeholder engagement. As a scholar, I coach young scholars to see the world from multiple points of view, and bring my research on the sciences of communication and well-being to the classroom.

You might say I did my career backwards, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
After spending the first 20 years of my career in the fitness, mind/body and higher education worlds — as a yoga therapist, CEC provider and college professor — I decided it was time for me to dedicate myself to scientific research and public health promotion.
So in 2006, I went back to school to earn advanced degrees in Health and Kinesiology (MEd, 2009) and Health Communication (PhD, 2014). I also completed further training in mind/body practices (ERYT 200/RYT 500). Along the way I maintained my private coaching practice, and worked with over 2000 individuals and organizations, including the Pan American / World Health Organization, the National Parks Service, and the Department of Defense.
Today you’ll find me spending my professional time using best practices in health communication at the MITRE corporation, a non-profit organization supporting U.S. government sponsors. My current assignment has me orchestrating the communication strategy of CDC’s Surveillance Data Platform with Shared Services Initiative — an exciting program which will change public health for the better.
In my civic time, you’ll find me bringing the self-care themes of my books Genius Breaks (2017) and Well-Being Ultimatum (2015) to people worldwide — and inspiring them to optimize their work with their lives.
